Snow Day Recipe: Mulled Wine
by Amy
Big, fat, fluffy flakes are falling outside. Thousands of them. We've already got 6 inches here in Nashville.
This is a Tennessee miracle, y'all.
Since we're all going to be snug in our houses this weekend, it's time to ransack the cupboards to make a lovely drink fitting for the occasion, don't you think?
Let's make mulled wine!
Super simple version: if you're lucky enough to have Penzey's Mulling Spices on hand, combine 1 tablespoon of mulling spices per bottle of red wine (I bet this fruity zinfandel would make some delicious mulled wine), bring to a boil, then simmer for 10 minutes. Easy peasy.
But don't fret: the "hard" way isn't much more work. Here's what you need:
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 1 whole nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon whole cloves
- zest of 1 orange (none of that white stuff—that'll make it bitter!)
- 1 bottle of red wine
Directions: bring to a boil, and simmer for 10 minutes. Fish out the whole spices, if you wish.
Don't have whole spices? Go light on the ground spices, mixing and matching until you've got the right flavor combo. Remember: you can always add, but you can't take away.
And that, my friends, is how to make a perfect snow day drink.
Cheers!
Share the Snow Day love!
